Cholesterol Awareness. Determine Your Risks For Cardiovascular Disease

The Cholesterol Institute study guide provides a rich source of information on heart problems and cholesterol.

High cholesterol levels

Cholesterol awareness has become a very popular topic in the last 10 years or so.

It seems that once we reach age 40, we are all tracking our cholesterol levels as close as we watch our waist lines. Regrettably both seem to increase after 40.

Even though, smaller is much better when it comes to cholesterol and waist lines, our bodies need cholesterol for basic cell functioning. Men and women can't create sex hormones without it. And you also cannot break down your food without cholesterol being present in your digestive tract. Even your cells need cholesterol for their outside protective tissue layer.

The problem however is when we have an excessive amount of cholesterol in the blood stream and deposits of plaque come up in the blood vessel walls.

Many people produce more cholesterol than is required. Lowering our consumption of foods high in fatty foods and trans fats would be an excellent health choice.

What high cholesterol can cause

Excess LDL cholesterol gets deposited on the artery walls which feed oxygen rich blood to the heart and brain. Inflammation in the arterial blood vessels can exacerbate the problem and result in a build up of calcium and plaque in the artery walls. This disorder referred to as coronary artery disease is the cause of cardiac arrest and strokes.

High Cholesterol affects about 17% of People in America over the age of 20. Cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis is throughout the world, the one primary cause of death and disability.

Take control of your own lives

As bad as the news is, there is a silver lining to this cloud. Coronary disease is generally preventable. Your chances of acquiring coronary disease can be greatly reduced by following recommendations set forth by the NCEP, The Natural Cholesterol Education Program, and they provide steps that you should consider. In summary, work out, follow a heart nutritious diet low in trans fat and saturated fat, quit smoking and if you are fat, slim down. If this fails to sufficiently lessen your cholesterol or you want a quick start, try out a medically proven natural product and also a high potency Omega 3 fish oil product.
