A Moody High School Student Exhibits Numerous Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Expelled From School, And Has To See The School PsychologistStephen was a seventeen year old high school junior who was displaying several alcohol-related issues at school. As a result, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist, before he would be permitted to return to class. Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to clarify his school situation to his Mom and Dad. His Mom and Dad were "fairly traditional" and informed Stephen that getting suspended from school was not a feasible educational plan of action. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his ankles that could conceivably mar his educational attainment for the rest of his life. What is more, Stephen's parents were quite disturbed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second. It was apparent that his parents were completely in accord with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he had better come to the understanding that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school counselor. After his conversation with his Mom and Dad, Stephen at last agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning before school. When Stephen got to his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she promptly surveyed all of the alcohol-related issues Stephen had experienced and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related activities signaled such alarm. Quite frankly, Stephen was unsure why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school psychologist. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking situation? Because almost all of his peers drink about as much as he does, essentially, drinking is no big thing. Stated more directly, if just about everybody is drinking, why is this such a big deal? In short, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to thwart his ability to function as an accountable young man. As articulated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your friends drink wine, hard liquor, beer, or wine coolers does not mean that it is the best thing in the world for you." Luckily, Miss Pender was very well prepared for her meeting with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that listed diverse drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a lot of data that applied chiefly to teens. After Miss Pender verbalized the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was obvious that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real shock to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the long term and the short term results of alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to back up what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction statistics and facts that related to everyone in general, and particularly to teens. Definitely, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen immediately understood why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his classmates any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she reviewed and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
